Dealing with Wrinkles in a Tie

One important thing that should be learned by all of us is how to deal with wrinkles on a tie. A tie with wrinkles looks worn and will damage your image as a professional.

Preventing Wrinkles

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" - Ben Franklin

You should give your best effort to prevent wrinkles as opposed to removing a wrinkle when one is found. Here are some tips to help prevent wrinkles from occurring in the first place:

  • Do not tie the knot too tight
  • Remember to untie you tie after use. If not, permanent wrinkles will be created. (Unfortunately, most people do not follow this advice. They never untie a tie, they just pull down the knot to allow them to pull it over their head. The next day, they just put the tie back on their neck and move the knot up to the collar.)
  • If you are traveling, roll up your ties and do not let other items in the suitcase to squeeze them too much. You may want to consider purchasing a tie case or tie caddy.

Removing Wrinkles

Even if you follow all the tips above, you still may have slight wrinkles on your tie after use. Here are some tips to help remove those wrinkles:

  • Hang up your tie for a period of time and most slight wrinkles will disappear.
  • If that doesn't work, roll up the tie, flattening the wrinkles during the process. Then put the rolled tie on a flat surface (such as a table) for a period of time. After that, you may hang it up for a little longer, and you'll find that the wrinkles are gone.

If you follow the above tips, but the wrinkles persist, you may consider ironing your tie.
